You saved up for that graphics card. Maybe it was a few hundred bucks, maybe a lot more. You use it for gaming, video editing, or just making sure your desktop doesn't choke on a YouTube tab. What you probably didn't sign up for was silently donating its processing power to a stranger's crypto wallet somewhere on the other side of the world.

That's exactly what cryptojacking malware does — and it's more common on everyday Windows PCs than most people realize.

What Is GPU Cryptojacking, Actually?

Cryptocurrency mining — the process of validating blockchain transactions to earn coins like Monero or Ethereum Classic — requires massive amounts of computational grunt. Graphics cards are particularly good at this kind of parallel number-crunching, which is why legitimate mining operations run warehouses full of GPUs.

Cryptojacking is the criminal shortcut: instead of buying hardware, attackers infect your machine with software that does the mining for them using your GPU, your electricity, and your hardware lifespan. The profits go entirely to them. You get nothing except a sluggish PC, sky-high electricity bills, and potentially a graphics card that ages years faster than it should.

This isn't some niche threat either. Security researchers have found cryptojacking code bundled inside pirated games, fake software cracks, shady browser extensions, and even legitimate-looking freeware installers. It's also been delivered through drive-by browser scripts — sites that mine crypto just by keeping a tab open in your browser.

Why Your GPU Is the Target (Not Your CPU)

Your CPU can mine crypto too, and CPU-based cryptojacking definitely happens. But modern GPUs have thousands of small processing cores designed specifically for parallel computation. For certain cryptocurrencies — especially Monero, which is practically the go-to coin for malware authors because it's harder to trace — a mid-range gaming GPU can outperform a high-end CPU by a factor of ten or more.

That means your RTX 3060 or RX 6700 is a genuinely attractive target. And because most Windows users don't have a habit of monitoring GPU usage the way IT departments do, the malware can quietly run for weeks or months without anyone catching on.

The Warning Signs Your GPU Is Being Exploited

Before you dive into detection tools, your own senses are actually a decent first alert system. Watch out for:

How to Check GPU Usage in Windows

Windows Task Manager got a meaningful upgrade in Windows 10 and 11 — it now shows GPU utilization, which is exactly what you need here.

Step 1: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then click "More details" if you're in the compact view.

Step 2: Head to the Performance tab and click on GPU in the left sidebar. You'll see real-time usage graphs broken down by engine type (3D, Copy, Video Decode, etc.).

Step 3: Now switch to the Processes tab. Right-click the column headers and enable the GPU column if it isn't showing. Sort by GPU usage.

Here's the key thing to watch: if something unfamiliar is sitting at the top of that GPU column — especially when you're not running any games or GPU-intensive apps — that's suspicious. Mining malware often disguises itself with generic names like svchost.exe, wuauclt.exe, or random strings of letters. Don't assume a familiar-sounding name means it's legitimate.

Go Deeper with Free Third-Party Tools

Task Manager is a good starting point, but it doesn't tell you everything. A couple of free tools can give you a much clearer picture.

GPU-Z (from TechPowerUp, completely free) gives you granular real-time stats on GPU load, temperature, memory usage, and clock speeds. If your GPU is pegged at 95–100% load with no games running, that's a major red flag. You can grab it at techpowerup.com.

MSI Afterburner is another free option that includes a real-time usage overlay and logging. Even if you don't have an MSI card, it works with virtually any GPU. It's great for running a log over time to see if your GPU spikes when you're away from your desk.

If you see sustained high GPU load with no clear application to blame, move straight to the cleanup phase.

How to Find and Remove Cryptomining Malware

Detecting the behavior is one thing — actually getting rid of the culprit is another. Here's a practical removal approach for Windows users.

1. Run Malwarebytes (Free Version) Malwarebytes is one of the best free tools for catching the kind of malware that traditional antivirus sometimes misses. Download it from malwarebytes.com, run a full system scan, and let it flag anything suspicious. It has a solid track record against known cryptojacking families.

2. Check Your Browser Extensions Browser-based miners are sneaky. Open your browser's extension manager (in Chrome, go to chrome://extensions) and look for anything you don't recognize or didn't intentionally install. Delete anything questionable without hesitation.

3. Audit Your Startup Programs Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, go to the Startup tab, and disable anything unfamiliar. Mining malware often plants itself here to survive reboots.

4. Look in Task Scheduler Search for "Task Scheduler" in the Windows search bar and browse through the task library. Malware sometimes creates scheduled tasks to re-launch itself even after you kill the process manually. Delete any tasks you don't recognize.

5. Run Windows Defender Offline Scan For stubborn infections, Windows Defender's offline scan mode runs before Windows fully loads, which helps it catch malware that hides during normal operation. Search for "Windows Security" > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
