How Hackers Actually Get Into Your Camera

Process Explorer (from Microsoft Sysinternals): This is a more advanced Task Manager replacement from Microsoft itself — completely free and trustworthy. You can use it to dig deep into running processes and see exactly what each one is doing. Windows Security (built-in): Don't overlook what's already on your machine. Windows Security — formerly Windows Defender — does a solid job of catching known RATs and stalkerware. The Physical Solution Nobody Can Hack
Here's the thing about software-based protections: they're only as good as your ability to keep your system clean. If a sophisticated piece of malware gets in, it might be able to suppress indicator lights and bypass monitoring tools.
That's why the most reliable solution is also the simplest one: a physical webcam cover.
These little sliding covers cost anywhere from $1 to $5 on Amazon and stick directly over your camera lens. When the cover is closed, nothing can see through it — period. No software exploit, no malware, no remote attacker can see through a piece of plastic. Even Mark Zuckerberg famously uses tape over his laptop camera, so you're in decent company.
For desktop users with external webcams, the easiest option is to simply unplug the camera when you're not using it. No power, no signal, no problem.
Lock Down Your Browser Camera Permissions Too
Don't forget that your browser is a major entry point for camera access requests. In Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, you can manage which websites are allowed to use your camera:
- Chrome/Edge: Settings → Privacy and Security → Site Settings → Camera
- Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Permissions → Camera
